چکیده

The profiles of Hα in a number of cool Ap stars are anomalous. Broad wings, indicative of temperatures in the range 7000-8000K end abruptly in narrow cores. The widths of these cores are compatible with those of dwarfs with temperatures of 6000K or lower. This profile has been known for Przybylski’s star, but it is seen in other cool Ap’s. The Hβ profile in several of these stars shows a similar core-wing anomaly (CWA). In Przybylski’s star, the CWA is probably present at higher Balmer members. We are unable to account for these profiles within the context of LTE and normal dwarf atmospheres. We conclude that the atmospheres of these stars are not “normal.” This is contrary to a notion that has long been held.

On the anomaly of Balmer line profiles of A-type stars

In previous work, Gardiner et al. (1999) found evidence for a discrepancy between the Teff obtained from Balmer lines with that from photometry and fundamental values for A-type stars. An investigation into this anomaly is presented using Balmer line profiles of stars in binary system with fundamental values of both Teff and log g. A revision of the fundamental parameters for binary systems giv...

Some Aspects of the calculation of Balmer lines in the sun and stars

We compare the results of Balmer-line calculations using recent theory and improved computational algorithms with those from the widely-used SYNTHE and BALMER9 routines. The resulting profiles are mostly indistinguishable. Good fits to the normalized solar Balmer lines Hα through Hδ are obtained (apart from the cores) using the recent unified-broadening calculations by Barklem and his coworkers...

Balmer emission - line profile variations in NGC 4593

We present results of a variability campaign of Balmer line profiles inNGC 4593. The continuumand the broad emission line intensities varied up to 50 per cent during the observing period. The rms profiles of the Balmer lines as well as the difference line profiles can be described by a limited number of strong components only: a central component and two to four outer components which are locat...

Using Balmer line profiles to investigate convection in A and F stars

Balmer lines are an important diagnostic of stellar atmospheric structure, since they are formed at a wide range of depths within the atmosphere. The different Balmer lines are formed at slightly different depths making them useful atmospheric diagnostics. The low sensitivity to surface gravity for stars cooler than ∼8000 K makes them excellent diagnostics in the treatment of atmospheric convec...

Stellar population models to predict the H Balmer and HeI lines in absorption are presented. Models are computed for burst and continuous star formation. It is found that the Balmer and HeI line profiles are sensitive to the age, except during the first 4 Myr of the evolution, when the equivalent widths of these lines are constant. The comparison of these lines with the corresponding nebular em...
